About Me: Michael Fuller’s Story
Michael Fuller is currently a general assignment reporter at NBC Connecticut and has been since August of 2020. Prior to his role in Connecticut, Michael was apart of the WLTX-TV CBS affiliate news team in Columbia, SC where he joined as a Multimedia Journalist in January of 2018.
While in South Carolina he covered a wide variety of stories from Hurricane Florence and Dorian, the shooting of seven officers in Florence county and of course the rise of COVID-19. One assignment that made a major impact on him was when he became a bureau reporter focusing his reports out of the county of Orangeburg.
WLTX created a pilot program called ‘Street Squad’ which was centered around generating hyper local news content for underserved areas in the market and Michael’s coverage area was Oragneburg. It was there that the community shared with Michael, that this was their first time experiencing a television news reporter that was dedicated to their county and covering stories outside of crime. Orangeburg being a predominantly rural county, many areas struggle with broadband and connectivity, resulting in many viewers expressing their gratitude to the station for giving them an opportunity to see themselves in a traditional format such as TV.
From getting that feedback Michael made it his absolute mission to show a whole reflection of the community in his coverage. From council meetings to honoring pillars of the county he saw the important role that community journalism played in the county which prompted him to do this subject focusing on the role local news plays in society.
Michael grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. At a young age, he was very active in his church community and it was there where Michael learned that he had a passion for broadcast journalism.
Michael graduated from Hofstra University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. During Michael’s time at Hofstra he hosted the student — run radio morning show on WRHU-88.7 FM, home to the New York Islanders. He also co-anchored the television news program Hofstra Today, hosted F.Y.I. Long Island and hosted four of Hofstra’s long-standing fall festivals that drew thousands of Hofstra students, family and alum each year.
In the fall of 2016 Michael covered the Presidential debate and the Democratic National Convention. Michael also had the opportunity to interview the Independent Presidential candidate Jill Stein.
A few of Michael’s professional internships include the Philadelphia ABC station, WPVI-TV, NBC’s Today Show, and NBC 4 New York, Investigative Unit. Michael also interned with Walt Disney Parks & Resorts as an Entertainer and became a seasonal cast member for five years. Michael is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists.
Michael has always been driven to find the good in people as he believes that having a platform to share inspirational and encouraging stories may inspire others to press forward to realize their purpose to be a productive citizen.
